Setting up a primus broadband modem with wireless router

Very recently I subscribed to primus internet service, specifically the 7 MB broadband connection. Funny enough with the package I did not receive any detail of how to set up.

One of my friend mentioned to me that your username and password to login can be found underneath the modem.

Since I had a wireless router I found it useless to get one of their modem-cum-router instead I opted for the regular modem (speedtouch). Since this was a DSL connection there were some changes that needs to be done for my wireless router (linksys) to work properly.

Apart from the standard connection of connecting your modem to router’s internet connection. The modem which primus gave were apparently a bridged modem, which was by default connected set up to PPOE mode.

Now only change was required at the router level. Just by going to the router setup page and changing my connection to PPOE and entering the username (which is like an email id) and password and saving the changes.

At this point I also found it wise to update my routers firmware just to be up to date with security.

Since initially it took a while for me to figure this out, I thought it might be useful to post these online for someone out there fighting with primus connectivity issues.

  5. Really good article, but it won’t really to be compatible with my router ip, any ideas?

  6. Read your blog , i have a thomson router through primus but seem unable to configure it to my computure . I tried the primus helpline but all i succeeded in doing was locking myself out of said computer because where he left me with his instuctions meant that the user name and password given by primus , were not leting me log in to the system , any ideas

  7. Thank you!!
This came in VERY handy when the charity I volunteer for asked for help restoring their Internet connection.

  8. if this doesnt work try this before doing this

Access your modem via Internet Explorer (192.168.1.254 in my case).

Click on Speedtouch in the upper right and “setup” appears near the bottom of the window.

Click on “setup” and then “next” and then select “routed PPP” then “next”

    Select VPI/VCI = 0.35

Connection type = PPP over Ethernet

enter your username and password then “next”

leave administrator password blank then click on “start”

And then login to your router and do same as above.

My blog goes over a lot of the same topics as yours and I believe we could greatly benefit from each other. If you happen to be interested feel free to shoot me an e-mail. 13. An hour with their tech support (reading their scripts) and they couldn’t tell me if it was PPPoE or PPPoA. Now I know and I have broadband back – Many thanks!

  14. You need a wired link from the telephone jack to the modem. If the modem is a modem / reutor / switch / wireless access point integrated into one unit, you then can activate the wireless for all LAN devices but you MUST configure the reutor and wireless portions via a wired pc to modem / reutor / switch / wireless access point port.If you have a strict modem (not an integrated unit as described above), you need a wired link from modem feed to reutor / switch / wireless access point WAN port as you will need a reutor / switch / wireless access point integrated unit. You also need to use a pc with a wired link to a reutor LAN port to configure the reutor.VA:F [1.9.21_1169](from 0 votes)
